100% | Cuphead: Finale – The Devil A+ Ranking

WHAT’S CUPHEAD?
A Shoot’em up / Platformer released on September 29th, 2017.

IT’S KNOWN FOR BEING DIFFICULT.
Forbes, The Verge and other sites say this game is difficult, according to the only search I did on this game’s difficulty level.
Why search further when I KNOW from experience, especially since I am trying to COMPLETE THE GAME?!?
Since playing the platforming-shoot-em-up, I have fallen in love and wish to complete the game.

RED SONJA, THE MIDWEST CUPHEAD LIAISON
So far, the Cuphead player I look up to, Red Sonja, plays competitively and holds a couple of records for speed running Cuphead, one of those records being a WORLD RECORD in a blindfolded run!
This player’s skills have inspired me to pick up the title.
Be sure to check out Red Sonja on Twitch

INITIAL PLAY THROUGH
The first play through was fun and leisurely.
Each initial boss encounter was annoying, until I learned the bosses’ patterns.
First play through of Finale – The Devil was nothing to scoff about.
Playing to get A+ rankings on all stages proves to be MUCH more difficult than the initial play through.
Summary on initial play through, every level is pretty damn difficult.

FINALE – THE DEVIL
Primary weapon choice, Charge Shot.
Secondary weapon, Roundabout.
Was able to finish this stage in 1 minute and 50 seconds.
This was after MANY failed attempts.
Now to sum up the game play with a few tips:

Pay attention to patterns.
Like any boss battle, moves will be repeated. You get the pattern down, the boss is easier to manage.

Timing on the goat clap
When The Devil turns into a goat, he claps his hooves.
This motion takes up the entire stage floor, forcing you to jump in order to dodge.
The timing of the clap depends on if you are airborne as The Devil morphs into the goat.
If airborne, the clap will happen sooner than if you are grounded.

– Chips fall in order
After completing the “throne” stage of the battle, you will descend into the next phase.
Among other projectiles, poker chips will fall from above covering one of 5 floating platforms available to stand upon.
These chips make it difficult to use jumping as a way to dodge the other projectiles.
There is hope in knowing the pattern in which the chips fall:

  • No more than one chip will fall at a time.
  • After the first two chips fall, you will know where the rest of the chips will fall for the remainder of the stage.
  • If the second chip falls to the left of the first, then the remaining chips will fall to the left of the previous chip. (same for the right side)

What to equip?
There are two guns, The Charge Shot and Roundabout, that cover every need I have to succeed in Cuphead.
Optimal weapon for phase one is a healthy combination of Roundabout and Charge Shot.
Optimal weapon for phase two is Roundabout.
Optimal charm is Smoke Bomb.
Optimal Super Art is Super Art I – Energy Beam

UPCOMING FOR CUPHEAD:
Looking forward to an EXPERT play through at some point. (heard that there was an S ranking to get.)
